When buying aluminum coil, you'll see numbers like 1100, 3003, 5052, 6061. They're not random – each tells you what that alloy can do.

Pick wrong = project fails. Pick right = you're a hero. Here's the simple truth.

2xxx Copper Strong but rusts (rarely used)

5 Grades You'll Actually Use

1xxx Series (1050, 1060, 1100)

Personality: Super soft, excellent corrosion resistance, great conductivity, low strength
Uses: Chemical equipment, electrical conductors, decorative trim

3xxx Series (3003, 3004, 3105)

Personality: Medium strength, good corrosion resistance, weldable, most widely used
Uses: Roofing, gutters, cookware, storage tanks, signs

Fun fact: Your soda can is made of 3004!


️ 5xxx Series (5052, 5083)

Personality: High strength, salt-water resistant, weldable
Uses: Boat hulls, fuel tanks, pressure vessels, truck bodies
Price: $$-$$$

Real story: 5052 used in Florida marina – still looked new after 5 years in salt spray.


️ 6xxx Series (6061, 6063)

Personality: Heat-treatable, high strength, extrudable
Secret code: 6061-T6 means heat-treated, tensile strength 310 MPa
Uses: Structural frames, bridges, window frames, bike frames

8xxx Series (8011)

Personality: Great for thin gauges, cost-effective
Uses: Kitchen foil, bottle caps, pharmaceutical packaging
