Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet

1. Product Overview

Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet (SPCC/DC01/A1008) is produced by further processing hot-rolled coils at room temperature. This process results in a product with a superior, smooth surface finish, precise and consistent thickness tolerances, and increased strength and hardness due to work hardening. It is characterized by excellent formability and dimensional accuracy, making it the preferred and cost-effective material for applications requiring a high-quality appearance and precise fabrication, such as automotive body panels, household appliances, furniture, electronics casings, and various general industrial parts.

2. Key Features

(1)Superior Surface Finish and Dimensional Accuracy:

Features an exceptionally smooth, clean surface ideal for painting, plating, or direct use, along with very tight and consistent thickness tolerances for high-precision manufacturing.

(2)Enhanced Strength and Hardness:

Undergoes work hardening during the cold reduction process, resulting in higher yield strength, tensile strength, and hardness compared to its hot-rolled counterpart.

(3)Excellent Formability and Flatness:

Possesses good ductility and a uniform, stable microstructure, allowing for excellent forming, bending, and drawing capabilities while maintaining superior flatness and shape stability.

3. Technical Parameters of Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet

Parameter Specification / Typical Range Standard / Note
Standard Designation ASTM A1008, JIS G 3141, EN 10130, GB/T 11253/5213 Varies by region & grade
Thickness Range 0.3 mm ~ 3.0 mm (Common commercial range) Thinner gauges down to ~0.15mm for special applications
Width Range 600 mm ~ 1500 mm (Standard coil/Sheet) Mill-dependent, can be slit to narrower widths
Surface Finish Bright (Smooth), Matt, Rough Designated as e.g., BA (Bright Annealed) or according to Ra value
Tensile Strength 270 MPa ~ 600 MPa Varies significantly with grade (SPCC, DC04, etc.) and processing
Yield Strength 140 MPa ~ 350 MPa Higher than equivalent hot-rolled due to work hardening
Elongation (Min) 22% ~ 45% Higher grades (DC05/DC06) have superior elongation for deep drawing
Hardness 45 HRB ~ 85 HRB (Rockwell B Scale) Depends on grade and temper level (e.g., 1/4 Hard, Full Hard)
Flatness High Precision Superior to hot-rolled, critical for appearance parts and precision stamping
Primary Application Automotive panels, appliances, cabinets, furniture, electronics, general stamping Chosen for surface quality, precision, and formability

4. Application Scenarios

(1)Automotive & Transportation Body Panels:

Used for exterior and interior body panels, door skins, hoods, and trunk lids due to its exceptional surface smoothness, consistent thickness for precise fit, and excellent formability for complex stamping.

(2)Household Appliances & Electronics Housings:

Ideal for the outer casings of refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, and computer chassis, as it provides a flawless, ready-to-paint or coat surface, structural integrity, and good dimensional accuracy.

(3)General Fabrication & Metal Goods:

Widely used in office furniture, cabinets, shelving, lighting fixtures, and various stamped or formed industrial parts where a superior finish, high precision, and good strength-to-weight ratio are required.

5. FAQ

Q1:What is the main difference between cold-rolled (CR) and hot-rolled (HR) sheet?

A1:The key differences are surface finish and mechanical properties. CR sheet has a smooth, clean surface, tighter tolerances, and is harder/stronger due to work hardening. HR sheet has a scaled, rough surface, wider tolerances, is softer, and is more suitable for structural applications where finish is not critical.

Q2: Why is cold-rolled steel more expensive than hot-rolled?
A2:The additional cold reduction and annealing processes add significant production steps, requiring more energy, time, and equipment. This results in higher material costs compared to the simpler hot-rolling process, justified by the superior surface quality, precision, and enhanced mechanical properties.

Q3:How should cold-rolled steel be stored and handled to prevent corrosion?
A3:Although it has a cleaner surface, it is still susceptible to rust. It should be stored in a dry, indoor environment. During handling, gloves are recommended to prevent fingerprints (which can cause corrosion). For long-term storage or in humid conditions, protective oils or vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCI) packaging should be used.
