Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate

1. Product Overview

Hot-rolled carbon steel plate is a versatile structural material produced by rolling slabs at high temperatures. It features a characteristic mill scale surface and offers excellent strength, good weldability, and favorable formability. Its cost-effectiveness and reliable mechanical properties make it the fundamental choice for a wide range of heavy-duty applications, including building frames, bridges, ship hulls, industrial machinery, and storage tanks.

2. Key Features

(1)Cost-Effective Strength and Versatility:

Provides a fundamental combination of good tensile and yield strength at a lower production cost compared to cold-rolled or processed steels, making it the most economical choice for large-scale structural applications.

(2)Excellent Weldability and Formability:

Its relatively simple chemical composition and normalized microstructure allow for easy welding with common methods and good hot-forming capabilities, facilitating on-site fabrication and construction.

(3)Characteristic Surface and Availability: Features a rough, blue-gray mill scale surface and is produced in a wide range of thicknesses (from thin sheet to very thick plate) and large sheet/coil sizes, ensuring ready availability for diverse project scopes.

3. Technical Parameters of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate

Parameter Specification / Typical Range Standard / Note
Standard Designation ASTM A36/A572, EN 10025-2, JIS G3101, GB/T 3274 Varies by region & grade (e.g., S235, Q235)
Thickness Range 1.2 mm (18 ga) ~ 250+ mm Plate typically starts at >4.76mm (3/16")
Width Range 1000 mm ~ 3000+ mm (Mill-dependent) Commonly 1500mm, 1800mm, 2000mm
Sheet/Plate Length 6000 mm ~ 12000+ mm Standard lengths or random mill lengths
Yield Strength 235 MPa ~ 550+ MPa Depends on grade (e.g., A36: ≥250MPa, Grade 50: ≥345MPa)
Tensile Strength 400 MPa ~ 700+ MPa Corresponds to the grade specification
Surface Finish Hot-Rolled, with Mill Scale Characteristic blue-gray oxidized surface; often pickled & oiled (HRPO) for cleaner finish
Primary Application Structural frames, bridges, ships, machinery, construction, heavy equipment Chosen for strength, weldability, and cost-effectiveness in large-scale projects

4. Application Scenarios

(1)Primary Structural Fabrication:

Serves as the foundational material for building frameworks, industrial platforms, bridge components, and transmission towers due to its high strength-to-cost ratio and excellent load-bearing capacity.

(2)Heavy Machinery and Industrial Equipment:

Used in the construction of mining equipment, agricultural machinery, railroad cars, and shipping containers where durability, weldability, and the ability to withstand heavy stress and impact are critical.

(3)Infrastructure and Large-Scale Construction:

Essential for ship hulls, storage tanks, pressure vessels, and large-diameter pipelines, leveraging its availability in thick gauges and large sheet sizes for robust, welded structures.

5. FAQ

Q1:What is the difference between hot-rolled plate and sheet?

A1:The distinction is primarily based on thickness. Material thicker than approximately 4.76 mm (3/16 inch) is typically classified and sold as plate, while thinner material is classified as sheet or strip. Both are produced via the hot-rolling process.

Q2:Can hot-rolled plate be used for precision machining or applications requiring a smooth finish?
A2:Generally, no. Hot-rolled plate has dimensional tolerances and a surface roughness unsuitable for high-precision machining. For such applications, it is often used as a rough blank, which is then machined to final dimensions, or a cold-rolled product should be selected.

Q3:Is hot-rolled plate susceptible to warping or distortion?
A3:Yes, due to residual stresses from the rolling and cooling process, it can warp or distort, especially during cutting or welding. For critical applications, stress-relieving (normalizing) may be specified to ensure dimensional stability during machining.

Q4: How does weather exposure affect hot-rolled steel plate?
A4:Unprotected hot-rolled steel will rust (corrode) when exposed to moisture and oxygen. For outdoor or corrosive environments, appropriate protective coatings (paint, galvanizing) or the use of weathering steel (e.g., ASTM A588) is necessary for long-term durability.
